Gloeophyllum sepiarium was an isolated taxon in several early analyses (e.g., Hibbett et al. 1997), but several recent studies have suggested that it is closely related to Neolentinus and Heliocybe (segregates of Lentinus sensu Pegler; Thorn et al. 2000, Hibbett and Donoghue, 2001), as well as Donkioporia expansa, Boreostereum radiatum, and Veluticeps berkeleyi (Kim and Jung 2000). All of these taxa are lignicolous, and most have been shown to produce a brown rot and have a bipolar mating system. Based on these characters, a relationship to brown rotting polypores such as Fomitopsis or Oligoporus would be expected. However, such a result has not been obtained in molecular phylogenies, and the higher-level placement of the Gloeophyllum clade remains poorly resolved. A sequence labeled "Amylostereum areolatum" in this group may be mislabeled, because Amylostereum chailettii and A. laevigatum are both in the russuloid clade.
