The athelioid clade was recognized by K.-H. Larsson and colleagues (2004). This is a small group that includes only resupinate taxa. At present there are only three taxa in the clade, all members of Athelia, which are also the specifiers. However, some analyses suggest that other resupinate forms, the pileate-sessile, lignicolous species Plicaturopsis crispa, and the hypogeous false truffle Stephanospora caroticolor may be closely related to the athelioid clade (Binder et al., in press). This entire assemblage appears to be closely related to the euagarics clade, and may be its sister group (it may also be nested within the euagarics clade). Several sequences of "Athelia" spp. in GenBank cluster outside of the athelioid clade, suggesting that they are derived from misidentified materials, or that Athelia is polyphyletic (these are not mutually exclusive hypotheses).
